Update Regarding Route 9 Traffic Delays

[Update from VTrans, June 2 @ 1pm] Due to unforeseen events, Vermont Route 9 remained reduced to a single lane of travel from the Exit 2 Interchange into West Brattleboro this morning. Traffic has been restored to two lanes of travel.

Delays in curing concrete around drainage structures rendered VT 9 unsafe to restore to two lanes of travel this morning. This has been a changing and developing situation. Crews have resolved the problem now. Traffic may take some time to clear.

This work zone was due to extenuating circumstances, only. Work will resume tonight during regularly scheduled evening hours between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. Monday night through Friday mornings.

The Town of Brattleboro would like to notify residents, commuters, and local businesses of ongoing traffic congestion and delays associated with the Vermont Agency of Transportation Route 9 paving project.

Although construction activities are currently taking place during overnight hours, temporary roadway configurations and traffic pattern changes remaining in place during daytime hours have created significant traffic slowdowns and backups along portions of the Route 9 corridor.

The Town has received multiple reports regarding daytime traffic operations, including congestion at intersections, extended vehicle queues, and delays traveling through affected areas. Town staff are actively communicating with Vermont Agency of Transportation representatives and project contractors regarding these concerns and are working collaboratively to improve daytime traffic flow and minimize disruptions to the public.

Motorists traveling through the area should expect:

  • Traffic delays during daytime hours
  • Temporary lane shifts and narrowed travel lanes
  • Increased congestion at intersections
  • Changing traffic patterns throughout the project area

Drivers are encouraged to reduce speeds within work zones, remain alert to changing roadway conditions, and allow additional travel time when traveling through the corridor.

The Town of Brattleboro appreciates the patience and cooperation of the public while this important roadway improvement project continues.

This is a state-managed project, and all construction activities are being overseen by VTrans. The Town of Brattleboro is assisting with coordination and public communication.
